Day 12 Sunday 9 June

Bonjour mon amies,

Well rocketing along the river now and the towns get bigger along with the Cathedrals!! Coming to the end of the cruise. There just does't seem like enough time.

Lyon is a big city - 2nd to Paris with 1.5 mill - with an equally impressive Basilica - called a basilica because it was the site of 2 miracles!
I think I prefer the smaller towns where all the old buildings are found inside the walls - easy to find! It is amazing how far and how much the Roman influence has spread and we havent been to England yet!
The morning tour took us to Fourvier Hill where the Notre Dame Cathedral (Basilica) is located next to a copy of the Eiffel Tower! The views from here were fantastic even in the poor weather we had. We followed this with a walk around the old town and along the river where there was an artistic market with hand made/painted works of art and jewellery etc. Yes Beryl found things to buy of course!
Then it was back to the boat for lunch before the tour to Perouges.
In the Secret Passages
The Artistic Market
After Lunch we climbed on a coach for the short trip to the Medieval Town of Perouges. It is perched on top of a very steep hill and was well fortified with a big wall built all around which also served as the back wall of houses for the village. The streets are very rough cobble and take a bit of navigating. There is a central square and lots of characterful buildings and it made for a fascinating afternoon. They have a local delicacy called Galant (or similar) which is basically sugar coated Pizza.
